Bracing for Harvey: Resources for Shelter, Food, Supplies, and Transportation

With the onset of Hurricane Harvey, millions of Texans sought shelter, evacuated their homes, and began bracing for impact.

As this category 4 hurricane approaches the Central coastline of our great state, folks from Corpus to Galveston to San Antonio and beyond continue to make plans to ensure their own safety, as well as that of friends and family.

With residents of the Gulf Coast bracing for impact, aid organizations, along with local San Antonio business, are preparing to provide relief. Whether you are a Corpus Christi resident looking for a place to stay, a local San Antonian seeking information for a friend, or you just want to be informed of disaster relief available in the area, we’d like to provide some helpful resources to ensure you and your loved ones’ safety throughout this storm.

Shelter:

* Any evacuees seeking a shelter in San Antonio are asked to first visit the check in center in the 200 block of Gembler Road, where they will be assigned to a shelter somewhere in the city.

San Antonio's Salvation Army

San Antonio's Salvation Army is stocked up and ready to assist during the hurricane, and while their family shelter reached full capacity Thursday night, it is referring overflow to the Bexar County Reception Center at 201 Gembler Road.

Freeman Coliseum (for First Responders only)

Freeman Coliseum 600-700 beds are currently inside the Freeman Coliseum to house first responders coming in from around the state.

Airbnb

House rental site Airbnb is helping Harvey evacuees find temporary shelter by waiving all service fees for those checking in between Aug. 23 and Sept. 1.

Additionally, Airbnb is working to pair evacuees with homeowners who are willing to host them for free during the storm. Check Airbnb’s website for a current list of homes and rooms available at no cost.  Want to offer your room or home? Let Airbnb know here

St. Anthony Hotel

Downtown San Antonio Hotel, The St. Anthony is offering special nightly rates starting at $125. Pets of those affected are also welcome, according to a post on their official Facebook page.

La Cantera Resort & Spa

La Cantera Resort & Spa, on the city’s northwest side, is offering an "Emergency Evacuation Rate" of $119/ night, available through Aug. 31. According to the resort’s Facebook page, evacuees must present proof of residency upon check-in.

Menger hotel

The historic Menger hotel, in downtown San Antonio, is offering a Hurricane Evacuation Rate that includes parking for those who are "traveling to safety." For details, call 210-223-4361.

Omni La Mansion del Rio

La Mansion (downtown) is offering rates starting at $109 per night for evacuees. Proof of residency will be required upon check-in.

Supplies & Food:

Feeding Texas

Feeding Texas will be utilizing mobile food banks to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The mobile crews will respond during the immediate aftermath of Harvey.

H-E-B

H-E-B has routed trucks carrying additional stocks of water, food and batteries to stores in and around Corpus Christi and Houston and is prepared to deploy its mobile emergency response units, including mobile kitchens that are capable of feeding thousands of people. H-E-B’s emergency units also include mobile pharmacies along with electrical generators and water tankers.

Direct Relief

Direct Relief has pre-positioned Hurricane Prep Packs throughout the area. These supply packs have enough medicines and supplies to treat 100 patients for 3-5 days. Direct Relief’s Hurricane Preparedness Program Map can be viewed here, along with the current path of the storm.

Sam's Club

Sam's Club is waiving its membership requirements for the communities in the path of Hurricane Harvey and is stocking shelves with emergency necessities such as water, batteries, and grocery basics.

Travel

ATT Center Buses

Over 100 buses await deployment at the AT&T Center, ready to travel to the Corpus Christi area to pick up evacuees when necessary.

Highways

The Evaculanes on northbound IH37 have been activated to assist with evacuation efforts, from State Highway 358 north of Corpus Christi to just south of IH Loop 410 in San Antonio.

Air Travel

A number of major airlines issued waivers that allow passengers to reschedule their flights without paying change fees.

Delta Air Lines Lines is allowing anyone flying from Bush Intercontinental, Hobby Airport, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport or San Antonio International Airport to rebook flights scheduled for Friday and Saturday without penalty.

United Airlines is allowing the same out of most Texas Airports including Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Houston and McAllen-Miller International Airport.

Alaska Airlines has issued a change-fee waiver for flights out of Austin, San Antonio and Houston.

Spirit Airlines will do the same for passengers traveling in and out of Houston from Friday through Sunday.

Southwest Airlines is issuing a waiver for travel through Monday in and out of Austin, Corpus Christi, Houston, Harlingen and San Antonio.

Frontier Airlines will allow travel changes without penalty through Monday from Austin, Corpus Christi, Houston, Harlingen and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

San Antonio is asking any volunteers wanting to help to call 311. Additionally, the  San Antonio Food Bank and American Red Cross could use your help.

As we have all been made aware, Harvey is expected to be a "life-threatening storm"; one that poses a "grave risk" to those in its path. While we hope for the best, yet prepare for the worst, our thoughts are with our fellow Texans preparing for this natural disaster.
